How to Use UXSort

How to use uxsort (based on v1.6.0.1) 
uxsort has lots of interesting features. For example, you may copy your card list from Excel to the card table to quickly add all your cards to the list.
 
Overview Page 

The overview page provides an overview of the current project status and access to the previous projects.
 
  • To start, click [New Project] button to define a new card sorting project.

 

 

 

 
 
 
Cards Page 

The Cards page provides a form for you to add or update cards. You may copy from your Excel spreadsheet and paste all the card information to the card table. Note the card information you paste in needs to have the same amount of columns from Excel as the one on this page, including the ID column. The ID column has to be unique.
  • To add a new card, type in the Card form below. Hit Enter key to add the card. If you want to switch from Card Name field to other fields, hit the Tab key.
  • To copy a spreadsheet data, right click on the Card table on this page, click Paste.
  • To delete cards, select the cards, right click, select Delete to delete. You can delete multiple cards at a time.
 
 
Users Page 

The Users page provides a form for you to add or update users.
  • To add a new user, type in the User form below. Hit Enter key to add. If you want to switch from Name field to other fields, hit the Tab key.
  • To copy a spreadsheet data, right click on the User table on this page, click Paste. You may copy from your Excel spreadsheet and paste all the user information to the Users table. Note the user information you paste in needs to have the same amount of columns from Excel as the one on this page, including the ID column. The ID column has to be unique. If you are not sure about the columns, create a dummy user entry, select the user record on this page, right click, and select Copy to copy the fields and paste it in Excel. The Excel will show you all the columns.
  • To delete, select users, right click, select Delete to delete. You can delete multiple users at a time.
 

 
Run Sorting Session

If you have added users in the Users page, the user information will show up on this page.
  • To run a user session, click a user, click on the Launch Testing button. Then a new Window will pop up.
 
 
 
Then do your sorting task. Save the results before close the window.
 
 
User Sorting Session

The Window for the use sorting session is maximized by default. The left panel provides a default card sorting instruction, which can be collapsed during sorting. The central area has two panels - one for Initial Sets of cards and one for Sorted Cards.
  • To add a bucket in the Sorted Cards panel, click on the New Bucket button, or right click on the Sorted Cards panel.
  • To move a card from one place to another, drag the card and drop it to a bucket. If you drag a card onto another card, that card will be place under the same bucket.
  • To make the Font larger, click A on the toolbar.
  • To sort the cards, click Sort icon on the toolbar.
  • To expand or collapse the list, click Expand or Collapse icon.
  • To hide the tooltips when mouse over a card, click Tooltip icon on the toolbar.
  • To exit, click Save and then the Window Close button. The results will be saved.
  • To customize the Instruction, you have to go back to the UXSort program. Go the Run Menu and click the Customize Instruction to load your instructions (support web files).
 
 
Don't forget to update the status for the user - an easy job for you as UX researcher/usability engineer.
 
 
Reports Page

The Reports page provides a way to quickly cluster user card sorting results.
  • To create a report, click New Report button. Follow the dialog to pick users data you want to add to cluster analysis. Note, you must select at least two users' data for clustering analysis.
  • To view the dendrogram, click the Interactive Dendrogram tab. You may move the Cut-Off line (the blue line) to set the cut-off distance so that the grouping will be highlighted in different color.
  • To apply differnt clustering method or distance calculation, use the options in the toolbar of the tab. You will see immediate updates on the dendrogram.
  • To update the final dendromgram on the summary page, click Update on Summary on the toolbar.
 
 
 
You may move the line around to see the coloring on the background.
